Next Meeting:

Coaches' meetings will likely be scheduled in conjunction with the Lakeshore Shootout and the Southern Shootout soccer tournaments.

2008-2009 AHSSCA Board of Directors:

  • President  – Joe Webb

  • VP North – Brett Chapman

  • VP South – Chad Harrelson

  • Secretary – Steve Morisani

  • Treasurer - Joe Carter

Message from the President:

The new AHSAA proposals are out (14 in all). 1 of them is very soccer specific. 2 others relate to the same point brought up in the soccer proposal, and 1 other affects soccer as well as other sports. The Principal must vote by Feb 22nd. Please don’t let him vote without your having some input with him on these items.

Soccer – proposed by Robby Parker of Bob Jones

To change soccer sections to areas with the top 2 teams in each area advancing to the state playoffs

Rationale: Currently some sections have 8 teams. With the new classification in 2009-2009, some sections will have 9 teams. This will require some teams to play 16 section games, leaving only 4 games for other opponents. In addition, limiting the areas to 4 or 5 teams will cut down on travel that some teams must do to reach section opponents. Also this format will increase the teams in the playoffs, which will increase revenue from the sport. The extra round of playoffs can be held on the Saturday prior to the current 1st round, thus no additional loss of school time will be involved.

7. Football – proposed by Lynda Hall (not sure what school)

We propose to change classes 1A through 3A back to Area play in football beginning in 2010.

Without boring you with the rationale, it is similar to what is listed above in that people want more flexibility with scheduling due to 9 team sections.

9. Use of Athletic fields – proposed by Robby Parker of Bob Jones

To amend rule III, section 12, paragraph 3 of the AHSAA handbook, which currently states; During the school year, exclusive of allowable date, school gymnasiums and other facilities may not be open after school for practice and no balls or equipment of the game may be used to develop skills

The thing is that right now we can be fined if our kids use a field after school without our knowledge. This is ludicrous and needs to be changed.

10. Area Play for Football – proposed by Vic Wilson of Homewood HS

Proposal to return to Area play for football for the next reclassification.

Rationale: Area play will allow more flexibility for coaches when scheduling. With Region play, (especially unequal region play) coaches are locked into eight dates and opponents. This does not allow freedom to schedule a rivalry game. Also baseball and basketball are currently in area play, and moving football to the same format will add continuity and consistency across sports.

Please talk to your Principals before they vote on these ideas. #10 works hand in hand with #1 and suggests Area Play for all sports.
