State player of the Year:
Reed Matte, Sr., John Carroll (5A)

State coach of the Year:
Paul Stroud, Fairhope (6A)

 

2009 All-State Boys Soccer First Team

FORWARDS

·         Nick Bibb Hoover/6A Jr. Had 27 goals this year, and may get 40 next year

·         Chandler Hoffman Oak Mountain/6A Sr. UCLA-bound magician put 44 shots into the net this year

·         Alex Kuklinski John Carroll/5A Sr. Crafty maneuvers led to 67 goals over the past two years

·         Reed Matte John Carroll/5A Sr. Racked up 66 goals and 51 assists in two years

·         Alex Thompson Mountain Brook/6A Sr. Mountain Brook’s MVP had 28 goals

 

MIDFIELDERS

·         James Boone Benjamin Russell/5A Sr. One coach said his team did not stop him in four years

·         Blair Gaines Huntsville/6A Sr. Blend of skills leads him to play at Wofford next year

·         Nick DiRienzo Homewood/6A Sr. Had 24 goals for the Patriots this year

·         Kevin Rose Pelham/6A Sr. Tallied 23 of his 56 assists this season

·         Stefan Vaziri Oak Mountain/6A Sr. Picked up two State Player of the Year votes

 

DEFENDERS

·         Henley Carr Hoover/6A Sr. Top defender on a state semifinalist squad

·         Chip Elmer Briarwood Christian/5A Sr. His second-consecutive All-State nod at this spot

·         Daniel “D.J.” Gonzalez St. Paul’s/5A Sr. His injury stalled out UMS-Wright’s title run this year

·         Nathan Haywood Fairhope/6A Sr. This 6-foot-4 center back was crucial to the title

·         Landon Mueller Bob Jones/6A Sr. 6-foot-2 sweeper will walk on at Duke

 

 GOALKEEPERS

·         Justin Marshall Prattville/6A Sr. Added 12 shutouts this year for a career total of 47

·         Nick Piola John Carroll/5A Jr. 21 shutouts in 27 starts plus 83 saves
 

 

2009 All-State Boys Soccer Second Team

FORWARDS

·         Jonathan Alexander Altamont/3A Sr. Runs a 4.38 40-yard dash and had two goals in the final

·         Hunter Luker Sylacauga/5A Jr. North-South pick raced to 27 goals and 12 assists this year

·         Chase Maddox Cullman/5A Sr. Wallace-Hanceville signee had 25 goals and four assists

·         Olin Prosch Daphne/6A Sr. Had 26 goals and 16 assists; 60 career goals

·         Kyle Sherrin Fairhope/6A Sr. MVP of the 6A tourney heading to Birmingham-Southern

 

MIDFIELDERS

·         Andrew Arbet Cullman/5A Sr. 2008 North-South pick had 16 goals and 14 assists

·         Andres Aristizabal Oak Mountain/6A Sr. Someone besides Vaziri had to feed Hoffman

·         Garrison Brooks Carroll/5A Sr. Scored 22 of team’s 53 goals; assisted on another 14

·         Alex Reddy Mountain Brook/6A Jr. Often overlooked, but he ran his team’s attack

·         Willy Rouse Altamont/3A Sr. Great in the air and recorded 17 goals and 16 assists

 

DEFENDERS

·         Simon Basilico Altamont/3A Jr. Great marking back also piled up 10 goals, 11 assists

·         Cory Gonzalez John Carroll/5A Jr. So versatile he even scored 19 times this season

·         Hudson Jetton Spain Park/6A Sr. So good he got a State Player of the Year vote

·         Colby Phillips Athens Bible/1A Sr. Also won three gold medals at the state track meet

·         Eric Tift Grissom/6A Sr. Huntsville-area coaches bragged on him

 

GOALKEEPERS

·         Wilson Fisher Mountain Brook/6A Soph. His 75 saves led to a new school mark of 15 shutouts

·         Alex Levinson Chelsea/5A Jr. Grabbed 144 saves and seven shutouts in 19 games
