ALL-METRO SOCCER
TEAM: Freshman Collins, coach help MA girls soar

Montgomery Academy girls soccer coach Wulf Koch
wanted to boost his team to the top of the region
this season.
The task became that much easier when freshman Megan
Collins took the field. With Collins in the fold as
an attacking midfielder, Koch guided the Eagles to a
21-2 record and the second round of the Class 1A-4A
playoffs.
Collins is this year's Montgomery Advertiser
All-Metro Player of the Year and Koch is the Coach
of the Year. Catholic senior Colin Newmeyer and
Prattville coach Rob Mitchell are the boys Player
and Coach of the Year.
Collins scored 18 goals and set a state record with
40 assists. Koch said her long-distance shooting
ability makes her a good player, but her passing
ability is what makes her stand above the others.
"She can drop a 25-to-30 yard pass right on a dime,"
Koch said. "She's very, very good with that."
MA was 11-0 against local teams this season,
outscoring St. James, LAMP, Catholic, Trinity,
Prattville and Lee by a combined score of 55-6.
"Last year we lost a couple games to Catholic and
lost a game to Trinity," said Koch, who is also the
head coach for the AUM's men's soccer program.
"Being at AUM, we're the prime institute in soccer
in the city and I want MA to be the same. (AUM's)
men's team went to Final Four and I want the same
for the girls."
While the Eagles' playoff run ended prematurely,
Prattville's boys team nearly reached the pinnacle
after several close misses. For the fifth straight
year, the Lions returned to the state tournament.
They made it to the finals, where they dropped a 3-2
decision to Oak Mountain.
"Making it to the Final Four is what we try to do
every year," said Mitchell, who is 91-24-13 in five
seasons at Prattville. "Now we want to get to the
highest point and win a state championship one year.
We've got to keep working at it."
"We're getting closer every year. In the past, Oak
Mountain and Shades Valley are dynasty teams that
everybody talks about. They used to beat us pretty
hands-down and this year they only beat us by one.
We're just trying to get over the hump."
While Mitchell and the Lions narrowly missed new
heights in 2008, Catholic's Colin Newmeyer found
them. Newmeyer became just the fifth player in AHSAA
history to score 100 career goals.
Newmeyer scored 42 goals and had seven assists in 24
games this year and scored once every three times he
shot the ball. In doing so, he led the Knights to
their first playoff trip in 10 years and nearly
guided Catholic to a win in the playoffs as well.
He scored the team's only goal in a 2-1 overtime
loss to Bayside. By season's end, he had racked up
seven hat tricks (finishing with 16 in his career)
and 115 total goals. Newmeyer, who will play for
Tusculum College next year, was held scoreless in
just five games.
More impressively, he racked up all the statistics
and accolades while playing with a sports hernia.
Newmeyer underwent surgery this past Monday and is
currently suffering through a week of bedrest.
"I found out about it in the early winter and the
doctor said it could have gotten worse, but it
couldn't be more painful than it already was,"
Newmeyer said.
Newmeyer said it wasn't a tough decision to play his
senior year -- a season he had waited on since
joining the Knights. |
