2008 Boys Player of the Year

Tyler Smedley of Robertsdale High School was selected as the Mobile area Metro Player of the Year.

Robertsdale's Smedley a Goal-den Bear

Sunday, June 29, 2008

By MIKE HERNDON - Sports Reporter

Whatever it is a soccer player needs to be a consistent goal-scorer, Tyler Smedley has it.

Smedley has been a driving force in helping to put Robertsdale soccer on the map, scoring 32 goals last season and following it up with a 42-goal effort this year as the Golden Bears reached the second round of the 6A state playoffs for the first time.

2008 Boys Coach of the Year

Coach Paul Stroud of Fairhope High School was selected the Mobile Area Boys Coach of the Year.

Pirates respond to Guardsman's leadership

Sunday, June 29, 2008

By MIKE HERNDON - Sports Reporter

At least three times this year, Fairhope coach Paul Stroud would have been easy to pick out at a high school soccer event. He was the one wearing Army fatigues.

Stroud must balance his coaching duties with his service in the National Guard, where he is the operations officer for the 711th Brigade Support Battalion. He missed most of two seasons while serving with his unit in Iraq in 2004-05 and now, even though he's back home, he still has responsibilities with the Guard that take up much of his time.

2008 Girls Player of the Year
Chloe Estephan of McGill-Toolen was selected as the Mobile Area Girls Player of the Year.

McGill's Estephan repeats as top player

By MIKE HERNDON - Sports Reporter

Improving on a junior year that saw her score 66 goals and earn Press-Register player of the year honors might seem like a lot to ask, but McGill-Toolen midfielder Chloe Estephan did just that in 2008.

The Alabama signee scored an amazing 73 goals and led the Yellow Jackets to the second round of the 6A state playoffs during her senior year. She again is honored here as the Press-Register's girls' high school soccer player of the year for 2008.

2008 Girls Coach of the Year
Coach Joe Moody of Mary Montgomery was selected the Mobile Area Girls Coach of the Year.

Vikings' Moody credits seniors for banner season

By MIKE HERNDON - Sports Reporter

Joe Moody's soccer teams at Mary Montgomery personify consistency.

Moody collected his 200th win this year and now has 204 in 12 seasons of coaching. For those of you keeping score at home, that's 17 wins per year.

True to form, Moody led this year's Viking squad to a 19-3-2 record and a first-round playoff upset of Fairhope despite losing six starters off last year's squad. In recognition of the fine season, he is honored here as the Press-Register's 2008 coach of the year for high school girls soccer.
