Girls Player of the Year |
Meg Adams, Decatur, Senior:
Three-time Decatur Daily player of the year led
her team to its first state championship in
girls soccer. The senior forward scored 20 goals
and had a key assist on a late tying goal, which
sent the state championship game against
Briarwood into overtime. Finished her career
with 62 goals and will attend The University of
Alabama in the fall to start career as a
student, leaving soccer behind.

- Lindsey
Hawkins, Decatur, Senior
Midfielder set the tone for Decatur's attack.
Did not play soccer in 2007, opting for softball
instead. This was her first year playing soccer
with Decatur. Was named the Morgan County
Tournament's most valuable player and the
Decatur team most valuable player. Decatur High
valedictorian with a 4.5 grade point average
will attend Alabama.
- Georgia
Gamble, Decatur, Junior
Scored 12 goals and had nine assists. Before
the season, the forward was selected to travel
the region with the Olympic Development Team.
Three-year starter and four-year player for the
Lady Red Raiders. Plays club soccer with the
Raptors club out of Decatur. Was a first-
team selection to The Daily's 2007 All-Area
squad and was a Birmingham News All-State
honorable mention.
- Brenna
Horrocks, Athens, Senior
Transferred to Athens from Utah. With the
Golden Eagles, she became an immediate threat
from the midfield/striker position. Led
the team in assists with 22 and was second on
the team in goals with 18. Steadied the Lady
Golden Eagles' attack in helping them to the
Final Four. Signed to play at Jacksonville State
next year.
- Lauren
Polk, Athens, Senior
A senior keeper, Polk backstopped the Athens
defense, which allowed only 19 goals during the
season. She had 11 regular season shutouts and
two postseason shutouts. Her acrobatic saves in
the state semifinals against Decatur almost
helped the Lady Golden Eagles pull off the
upset.
- Arlee
Sowder, Brewer, Sophomore
Making her second appearance on the All-Area
squad. Finished second on Brewer with 14 points
and has started for the Lady Patriots since her
seventh-grade year.
- Anna
Zellner, Austin, Senior
The defender can chip in offensively when
she needs. Her coach, Charly Kusta, describes
her as an "excellent captain." Was named to the
Morgan County All-Tournament Team. Will play
soccer next season at Birmingham-Southern.
- Leslie
Kirk, Austin, Junior
Midfielder plays in the state's Olympic
development program. Made the Morgan County
All-Tournament team.
- Stephanie
Varner, Priceville, Senior
A first-team selection in 2007, Varner, a
forward, finished her career as Priceville's
all-time leading scorer with 36 goals. She
finished the 2008 season with 10 goals and was
named the team's MVP in helping the Lady
Bulldogs to their fifth straight playoff berth.

Jeremy Talley, Brewer, Senior
Considered one of the fastest players in the area, Talley used his
speed to lead the Patriots with 28 goals. He scored four goals in
the regular season finale against Madison County. In the 2007
off-season, Talley was diagnosed with a benign tumor in his knee and
strained a ligament in the same knee during the season. Still, he
bounced back to lead Brewer to the Class 5A semifinals in
Huntsville.

First Team Boys All-Area

- Jake Mendenhall, Austin, Senior
Team captain and
center-midfielder was one of the leading players in Austin’s attack.
The senior was the Black Bears’ most valuable player and was a
first-team all-area player in 2007.
- Raul Alanis, Decatur, Senior
Forward scored 31 goals on
the season and added 17 assists. Often found his way behind the
defense with his speed and finished off his runs with a powerful
shot.
- Michael Alfano, Decatur, Senior
Played in the backfield as
well as midfield and sometimes at forward if the Red Raiders needed
a goal in the final moments of a game. Considered one of the most
talented players in the area. Will play for Birmingham-Southern in
the upcoming season.
- Phoenix Iverson, Decatur, Senior
Midfielder roamed all over
the field for the Red Raiders. Scored a goal in the final game of
the Morgan County tournament to help Decatur defeat Brewer.
- Keith Slater, Brewer, Senior
The midfielder combined
with Kohl Sowder and Jeremy Talley to lead the Patriots to the Class
5A semifinal game against John Carroll Catholic. In that game,
Slater scored a goal. He finished the season with eight goals and 17
assists.
- Kohl Sowder, Brewer, Junior
Sowder made this list in
2007. He finished the season with 18 goals and 12 assists. In his
four years playing varsity soccer, Sowder has scored 72 goals and
passed out 32 assists.
- Danny Boersma, East Limestone, Junior
Midfielder led the attack
for an Indians team that made it to the Class 1A-4A state
semifinals. Finished the season with 12 goals and eight assists.
Scored the lone East Limestone goal in the Indians’ 2-1
double-overtime loss to Randolph in the semifinal match.
- Corey Wood, East Limestone, Junior
Consistent member of East
Limestone defensive corps who chipped in offensively on occasion.
Finished the season with three goals and six assists.
- Stephen Owen, Hartselle, Junior
Tied for the team lead with
nine goals. The junior midfielder and team captain was always
directing traffic and making sure that the young Tigers squad was
always in the right place.
